Cable fault cuts off West Africa

July 30th, 2009

The fault has caused severe problems in Benin, Togo, Niger and Nigeria. The blackout is thought to have been caused by damage to the SAT-3 cable which runs from Portugal and Spain to South Africa, via West Africa. Around 70% of Nigeria’s bandwidth was cut, causing severe problems for its banking sector, government and mobile phone networks. “SAT-3 is currently the only fibre optic cable serving West Africa,” explained Ladi Okuneye, chief marketing officer of Suburban Telecoms, which provides the majority of Nigeria’s bandwidth. “So all West African countries have to use it.” Companies were being forced to use alternatives – such as using satellite links – to maintain connections to the rest of the world, he said. Telkom South Africa, one of the shareholders of SAT-3, has not said what caused the problems but said it was aware of “a cable fault on the Benin branch that is being investigated”. The 15,000km (9,300mile) SAT-3 cable lands in eight West African countries as it winds its way between Europe and South Africa. “The rest of the system is unaffected by this fault,” a Telkom South Africa representative said. Nigeria has been badly hit because around 70% of its bandwidth is routed through neighbouring Benin. The network, run by Suburban Telecom, was set up to bypass Nigeria’s principal telecoms operator Nitel which runs the SAT-3 branch cable which lands in Nigeria. The SAT-3 consortium is in the process of sending a ship from Cape Town in South Africa to the area to investigate the fault. Mr Okuneye said that by the time the relevant paperwork was done, it was likely to be “two weeks” before the ship arrived off the coast. Meanwhile, Benin has been able to reroute its net traffic through neighbouring countries to get back online. Mr Okuneye said his company was hoping to do the same but said the process would be slower because its bandwidth requirements were so much larger than those of the small republic. Togo and Niger, which are not part of the SAT-3 consortium, remain offline.

Active Media Products Introduces Penguin Bootable Linux USB Drive

July 29th, 2009

Fremont, California, July 28, 2009 – Active Media Products (AMP), manufacturer of SSDs and WWF series USB drives, today announced immediate availability of a bootable Linux USB (BLU) drive that is compatible with Windows® 7 and benefits WWF. These new penguin BLU drives are preloaded with the full installation of Ubuntu Linux 9.0.4.

BLU drives allow booting into Ubuntu Linux from the USB drive regardless of what operating system is installed on the hard drive. Because the hard drive will still be fully accessible when booting from the BLU drive, it’s an excellent disaster recovery solution in the event of problems with the operating system on the primary hard drive, because important data files on the hard drive can be backed up onto the BLU drive or another USB storage device.

This BLU drive is designed in the likeness of an emperor penguin with exacting detail, and is made of non-toxic silicone rubber. This drive is completely free of PVC, lead and mercury. Every purchase of a penguin drive benefits World Wildlife Fund. Under its licensing agreement with WWF AMP develops and sells a series of portable USB flash drives in the likeness of endangered species, which now includes penguin, panda and polar bear drives, and contributes five percent of the retail price of this product line to WWF.

WWF Penguin BLU drives are offered in up to 16GB capacities. Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. The Ubuntu operating system occupies about 700MB of the drive, so there is still plenty of usable storage space for carrying photos, music and other data.

Western Digital Unveils 1TB, 750GB Notebook Drives

July 29th, 2009

Western Digital on Monday released its new 1-Tbyte and 750-Gbyte WD Scorpio Blue 2.5-inch internal SATA hard drives.

Both drives are in the 12.5-mm form factor, so they will fit in notebooks and small form factor desktops. The new 1TB capacity doubles the 500GB capacity that had become the large capacity standard for 2.5-inch hard drives. They also deliver a high performance 3GB per second transfer rate, but i still doubt.

The 750GB WD Scorpio Blue internal drive is available now for $189.99 and the 1TB version will be available for a $249.99.

Both can be purchased as external USB 2.0 drives as part of WD’s Passport Essential SE line for $299.99 (1TB) and $199.99 (750GB). They have WD features like WhisperDrive for quiet use, drop resistant ShockGuard, and SecurePark for more shock tolerance.

The internal and external drives show that users are still clamoring for more and more storage, especially with the prevalence of smartphones and digital cameras that can capture video. These drives mean that you don’t have to forego insane amounts of storage just because you have a laptop.

Because of the current price point, and since the drive is 12.5mm, it’s unlikely you’ll see them in netbooks, but you may eventually see them in high-end nettops, or more likely in small form factor systems like the Apple Mac mini. and wonder if this can be used to upgrade our nettops with a limit factor in the hardware side.

China iPhone man commits suicide

July 22nd, 2009

A young Chinese worker suspected of stealing a prototype for the fourth generation iPhone has committed suicide.

Sun Danyong worked for Foxconn, one of Apple’s largest manufacturers.

The Taiwanese firm has begun an investigation following claims made by the worker’s former classmates that he had been beaten by security staff.

Apple says it is saddened by the death and is waiting for the results of the investigation.

Sun Danyong was 25. He threw himself off a 12-storey building last week.

He worked for Foxconn in the southern city of Shenzhen and was responsible for shipping 16 iPhone prototypes to Apple.

One went missing. Sun reported the loss, and the company launched an investigation.

Three days later the worker jumped to his death.

Sun’s former classmates have told Chinese newspapers that during that investigation he was beaten, his house was searched and he was locked up in a room alone.

They say he described the experience in an online chat with them as one of the most humiliating experiences of his life.

Foxconn says it has suspended its chief of security.

The firm and the local public security bureau are investigating the allegations.

Foxconn has expressed its condolences to the worker’s family and set up extra counselling services for its employees.

The firm is Taiwanese. It has faced allegations in the past that it treats its employees badly, claims it has always vigorously denied.

The firm was also cleared at the time by Apple of any serious abuses.

Kenyan mosque jams mobile calls

July 17th, 2009

A device which blocks mobile phone signals has answered the prayers of some Kenyan Muslims.
Imams in Kenya have long complained that mobile phones constantly rang during prayers, disrupting services.

Imam Hassan Kithiye says he bought the machine in Dubai and it has been well received by his congregation.

A BBC correspondent in north-eastern Kenya says other mosques around Garissa town are now trying to raise enough funds to buy their own device.

One mosque has resorted to fining congregants $3 if their phones ring during a prayer service.

But this failed to solve the problem, imam Sheik Abbi-Azziz Mohamed told the BBC.

“We used to use that tyrant approach but it didn’t work. Some people are so poor that they cannot even afford to buy airtime. We couldn’t expect them to pay,” he said.
