October 16th, 2009

Dhiraagu introduced Mobile broadband as “Mobile Connect” which cost MRV 1200 for installation and transfer rate of 1 Laari per Kb which is expensive compared to wataniya package which gives you 2 products, one comes with 2GB monthly allowance costing MVR 250 and the other one with 6GB (MVR 590) allowance, installation cost MVR 500.  all i can say in here is Wataniya Mobile Broadband is faster in speed and cheap compared to dhiraagu package.

It’s exclusivity combined with simplicity

This exclusive service provides wireless internet speeds up to 1Mbps through the state-of-the-art 3G+ Network of Wataniya. All you need is the Wataniya Broadband SIM card and the exclusive slim & sleek W Modem.

It’s internet anywhere

It’s the most fantastic way to speed up your online experience. Now update your Facebook on the ferry, upload a video at a coffee or reply to that important email whie sitting on a beach.

    it seems its just a announcement from wataniya, in fact they havent even started the service.

    i did call 929 they said service may be available at the end of year.

    what a joke.

    seems that this is a soft launch from wataniya representative from their HELP center. am waiting for a Huge Launch if so to get the service. truly a JOKE

    @jinaa

    115kbps is 14kbytes or less, which doesn’t fall under “broadband” definition.

    @jinaa

    jinaa if it’s 115kbps how can it be 920Kb/s its the other way around 115kbps translates to around 14.3Kb/s doesent it?

    i dropped into wataniya last nite, they gave me a brochure set and a application form? i did ask them if i can get the service immediately and they did say that i can drop in the form and get the broadband SIM…

    now if it’s true, i’ll only know when i go into submit my form :p

    Hey Jinaa.

    Dhiraagu did not launch broadband, it only introduced a USB modem, which you can already buy from ebay or any other electronic shop. the only difference would be(which actually is a disadvantage) that Dhiraagu USB modem would be locked for use only with Dhiraagu SIM card. (same goes with Wataniya W Modem). but you can always unlock it with little work.

    in case of Wataniya, they did launch it, and with the 3G network, they can increase the speed upto 14.4Mbps in the future. the actual difference here is the packages, which makes it cheap using Wataniya internet.

    you could always browse the net with a USB modem since they launched the GSM mobile service, you just have to put a normal SIM card in it, only difference would have been that it would have cost you a hand and a leg to use it with the normal (1 laari or 2 laari per KB) rate. unfortunately, with Dhiraagu, still this is true.

    btw, i have been using an unlocked Wataniya modem (the same W modem they launched) for one month now :P
    my niece got it as a lucky draw winner in the last telecom fair in Naifaru. i got it unlocked and brougt it with me to use where i live, because we have mobile broadband here. i didn’t expect Wataniya to launch this so soon. :)

    I bought a Wataniya Broadband connection kit (i paid 2890.00 – USB MODEM + DEPOSIT + 6GB Package). It was working the day i bought and when i tried ti use it the next morning it wasn’t working. So had to take it back and had to wait for half an hour for just some to come and check whats wrong. After the person came, they couldnt make it work on my MAC(tried on MAC OS and WIN XP). Asked me they will check and call me back. They called the next day and said it is broken somehow. I went to the shop and demanded to see whoever is in charge. But nobody was available and told me to comeback 30 mins later. and when i went there to see the person, the Modem was working fine on WATANIYA’s laptop. Unfortunately i did not take my MAC so had to come home and check. but still it wasnt working. Again on the same day i went with my laptop to ask them to make the USB Modem work on my laptop. They couldnt and said that their marketing team will look into this matter and will get back to me in 24 hours. And then they started talking bullshit. That the Modem is not under any warranty or whatever. Once it leaves the shop it the owners responsibility and went so on. That was 2 WEEKS back. Havent heard from them YET.

    @hassan
    If the modem works on their computer, and it doesn’t on yours then it seems your computer is at fault. Could be your USB port

    wmodem is great! normal speed is around 200kbps…it looks cool too and its very mobile and convenient-anywhere anytime..ok..here’s the catch- you cant select the 3G network manually so sometimes (usually at startup)you would be connected to the EDGE network and so dont expect the speed to be anything above 30kbps…normal speed is around 15-20kbps in EDGE network

  13. May 8th, 2010 at 18:10 | #13

    @user, i have used it before (i have another modem now)and i could change it to connect only to 3G network. you just need to go to Options>Network and change it from there and you need to do it before you push the “connect” button.

    Has anyone of you tried the sim on an actual mobile telephone. and then tried to connect to the internet with it???

  15. July 19th, 2010 at 03:05 | #15

    dear fira,
    normal phone SIM’s wont get the speed due to the configuration because high speed data access is only given to specific SIM. also cost is very much different in normal data service in our service providers one operator charges 1laari per KB and the other double that price.

    cheers jinaa.com

    i meant the broadband “3g sim” on a phone. well anyways i found out. they are using it on ipad even. means i can just buy a broadband sim to use internet on a mobile. right???

  17. July 30th, 2010 at 07:26 | #17

    @FIRA
    Yes true in can be used, but better get a internet package than using data normal charges as they are expensive. ask them to get a package with specific allowance to your Mobile SIM.
