What Is Safe Mode?

November 30th, 2009

Q: How do you start the computer, to see all the icons on the desktop, if Windows XP does not boot up? I see these options and don’t know how to use them: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt.—Sham

A: When Windows has a problem and fails to boot properly, the next time you boot it will usually offer the options you have listed. Safe Mode starts Windows with the bare minimum of drivers and without any “launch at start-up” programs. It gives you a chance to investigate the problem even when you can’t boot fully into Windows. If you have anti-malware software installed, you can try to run a scan in case the problem was caused by malware. Most anti-malware will scan in Safe Mode, though typically real-time protection is disabled.

Safe Mode with Networking is exactly what it says—Safe Mode with additional components enabled to make network connection possible. Safe Mode with Command Prompt give you only a Command Prompt to work with; it’s rarely necessary.

Smart Switch Design Incorporates Power-Breaker

November 19th, 2009

In the past, I have laughed rather snidely at the paranoia my fellow countrymen exhibit regarding electricity. From grounded plugs on everything, to wall sockets with breaker switches, to public service commercials telling you to unplug everything at night in case you burn down the house, the Brits are an easy target.

But as my bedroom becomes home to more and more blinkenlight-equipped gadgets, the ability to just switch it all off is a tempting one. Yong-jin Kim’s solution is a Europlug-friendly design with the cute twist of looking like the universal power symbol. As you push in the plug, you depress the central line of the symbol. When this switch is all the way in, you can then twist the plug 45-degrees to the right, letting the sweet life-giving electrical juice flow into your gadget’s circuits. And of course, twisting back to the right cuts the power.

It’s a lot more compact and efficient than the UK’s standard socket, with its rectangular switch at the side of each outlet, and deserves to become a real product and not remain the CGI concept it is right now.

Modern Warfare 2 breaks all records

November 19th, 2009

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has set new benchmarks for the entertainment industry by becoming the biggest launch ever.  Move over Harry Potter, Batman and Grand Theft Auto IV, there is a new king.

With the threat of a sales boycott hanging over its head, the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was always going to be interesting.

Despite strong pre-sales, the news that rocked the PC gaming community – the lack of a dedicated server option – was enough to cause Activision execs some consternation.  Would PC sales of the game be drastically down?  Would the console platform sales be enough to warrant the games hype level?

Well it seems those quaking Activision execs can now order a new diving board for their money vault swimming pools.  COD:MW2 has broken just about every entertainment record there is to break.

Activision/Blizzard today announced: The biggest entertainment launch in history set a new worldwide estimated five-day sell-through record of approximately US$550 million, according to internal Activision estimates.

Modern Warfare 2’s launch beat all previous first-and five-day entertainment industry box office, book and video game sell-through records*:

*    The largest reported five-day opening worldwide box office gross figures, held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (US$394 million)

*    The largest reported five-day opening domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($203.8 million)

*    The largest reported five-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (6 million units, US$500 million)

*    The largest reported opening first-day domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight (US$66.4 million)

*    The largest reported first-day book sales in dollars, held by Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows (US$220 million)

*    The largest reported first-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (3.6 million units, US$310 million)

Modern Warfare 2’s blast radius also extends to Xbox LIVE, in which the blockbuster title’s epic release established the following new standards, according to Microsoft:

*         More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day alone.

*         More than 2.2 million unique gamers played Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 in one day on November 10th. A new one-day record for Xbox LIVE.

*         More than 11 million achievements were unlocked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day.

“In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon,” said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc.  “The title’s success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather engage in other forms of media.”

Dell unveils Android-based Mini 3 smartphone

November 17th, 2009

Dell said Friday that it’s ready to enter the smartphone business with the Android-based Mini 3.

Long rumored to have such a device in the works, Dell said that the first two carriers to sell the Mini 3 will be China Mobile and Brazil’s Claro.

The Mini 3 will apparently use OPhone, China Mobile’s customized version of Google’s Android operating system. “We are excited for Dell to be among the first manufacturers to introduce new technology based on the OPhone platform,” an unnamed China Mobile representative said in Dell’s press release.

We’ve got a call out to Dell to seek clarification on the operating system software.

Dell did not provide technical specifications or pricing information for the phone, saying those would be revealed when the device arrives in stores–probably late November for China Mobile and by year’s end for Claro. It also did not say when the phone would arrive in the U.S. or other markets.

Michael Tatelman, a Dell sales and marketing executive, told the Associated Press that the phone has a 3.5-inch high-definition touch screen. The Mini 3 sold in China won’t have Wi-Fi at the start, but Tatelman said that would come later.

Similarly, Apple’s iPhone just made its official debut in China sans Wi-Fi.

China Mobile has more than 500 million customers, and Claro serves more than 42 million people in Brazil as part of the America Movil network, Dell said.

Dell did tout its “existing agreements with other leading global telecom providers,” including Vodafone in Europe; AT&T and Verizon in the U.S.; M1 and Starhub in Singapore; and Maxis in Malaysia.

The Texas-based PC maker also played up the Internet connectivity angle of small mobile gadgetry.

“Our entry into the smartphone category is a logical extension of Dell’s consumer product evolution over the past two years,” Ron Garriques, president of the Dell Global Consumer Group, said in a statement. “We are developing smaller and smarter mobile products that enable our customers to take their Internet experience out of the home and do the things they want to do whenever and wherever they want.”

But does the world need a smartphone from Dell? The device will have plenty of company: Android phones have begun arriving on the market in larger numbers in recent months.

Most notably, U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless last week began selling the much-hyped Droid, made by Motorola, and the more modest Droid Eris, made by HTC.

On-the-fly encryption without administrative rights.

November 4th, 2009

As you know many disk encryption softwares lack the ability to be used on a Public computers (without having Administrative rights). Because they need to install virtual disk driver first, but this is possible only when you have Administrative rights (i.e. only on your Home PC). This issue becomes more significant when portable encryption solution is needed.
