Clarifi – Protective case with built-in close-up lens for iPhone 3G

December 23rd, 2009

Clarifi is no ordinary polycarbonate case.

That’s because, when the details matter, Clarifi’s built-in lens gives your iPhone a boost in camera resolution.

Slide the Clarifi lens into place over the built-in lens of your iPhone. Your macro and close-up shots are instantly finer in detail, more accurate in color. With Clarifi’s lens, your iPhone can image an entire business card with astounding clarity. Slide the lens aside for normal photography. WIthout Clarifi, iPhone requires about 18 inches to focus properly. Slide Clarifi’s lens into place and you can move in to 4 inches for crisp detail and great pictures.

Features

  • Close-up lens focuses close for incredible detail; perfect for capturing small details & text
  • Lens slides into place for close-ups, then back for normal photography
  • EasyDock lets you charge & sync without removing your iPhone from the case
  • No adapters or small pieces to lose; the lens is built in and slides in and out of place with the touch of a fingertip

Have your doubts about Clarifi’s clarifying power? Just check out the example photos on this page – unretouched and straight from the iPhone!

Modern Warfare 2 breaks all records

November 19th, 2009

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has set new benchmarks for the entertainment industry by becoming the biggest launch ever.  Move over Harry Potter, Batman and Grand Theft Auto IV, there is a new king.

With the threat of a sales boycott hanging over its head, the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was always going to be interesting.

Despite strong pre-sales, the news that rocked the PC gaming community – the lack of a dedicated server option – was enough to cause Activision execs some consternation.  Would PC sales of the game be drastically down?  Would the console platform sales be enough to warrant the games hype level?

Well it seems those quaking Activision execs can now order a new diving board for their money vault swimming pools.  COD:MW2 has broken just about every entertainment record there is to break.

Activision/Blizzard today announced: The biggest entertainment launch in history set a new worldwide estimated five-day sell-through record of approximately US$550 million, according to internal Activision estimates.

Modern Warfare 2’s launch beat all previous first-and five-day entertainment industry box office, book and video game sell-through records*:

*    The largest reported five-day opening worldwide box office gross figures, held by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (US$394 million)

*    The largest reported five-day opening domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight ($203.8 million)

*    The largest reported five-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (6 million units, US$500 million)

*    The largest reported opening first-day domestic box office gross figures, held by The Dark Knight (US$66.4 million)

*    The largest reported first-day book sales in dollars, held by Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows (US$220 million)

*    The largest reported first-day worldwide video game sales record, previously held by Grand Theft Auto IV (3.6 million units, US$310 million)

Modern Warfare 2’s blast radius also extends to Xbox LIVE, in which the blockbuster title’s epic release established the following new standards, according to Microsoft:

*         More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day alone.

*         More than 2.2 million unique gamers played Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 2 in one day on November 10th. A new one-day record for Xbox LIVE.

*         More than 11 million achievements were unlocked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day.

“In just five days of sell through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the largest entertainment launch in history and a pop culture phenomenon,” said Robert Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard, Inc.  “The title’s success redefines entertainment as millions of consumers have chosen to play Modern Warfare 2 at unprecedented levels rather engage in other forms of media.”

Cable fault cuts off West Africa

July 30th, 2009

The fault has caused severe problems in Benin, Togo, Niger and Nigeria. The blackout is thought to have been caused by damage to the SAT-3 cable which runs from Portugal and Spain to South Africa, via West Africa. Around 70% of Nigeria’s bandwidth was cut, causing severe problems for its banking sector, government and mobile phone networks. “SAT-3 is currently the only fibre optic cable serving West Africa,” explained Ladi Okuneye, chief marketing officer of Suburban Telecoms, which provides the majority of Nigeria’s bandwidth. “So all West African countries have to use it.” Companies were being forced to use alternatives – such as using satellite links – to maintain connections to the rest of the world, he said. Telkom South Africa, one of the shareholders of SAT-3, has not said what caused the problems but said it was aware of “a cable fault on the Benin branch that is being investigated”. The 15,000km (9,300mile) SAT-3 cable lands in eight West African countries as it winds its way between Europe and South Africa. “The rest of the system is unaffected by this fault,” a Telkom South Africa representative said. Nigeria has been badly hit because around 70% of its bandwidth is routed through neighbouring Benin. The network, run by Suburban Telecom, was set up to bypass Nigeria’s principal telecoms operator Nitel which runs the SAT-3 branch cable which lands in Nigeria. The SAT-3 consortium is in the process of sending a ship from Cape Town in South Africa to the area to investigate the fault. Mr Okuneye said that by the time the relevant paperwork was done, it was likely to be “two weeks” before the ship arrived off the coast. Meanwhile, Benin has been able to reroute its net traffic through neighbouring countries to get back online. Mr Okuneye said his company was hoping to do the same but said the process would be slower because its bandwidth requirements were so much larger than those of the small republic. Togo and Niger, which are not part of the SAT-3 consortium, remain offline.

Active Media Products Introduces Penguin Bootable Linux USB Drive

July 29th, 2009

Fremont, California, July 28, 2009 – Active Media Products (AMP), manufacturer of SSDs and WWF series USB drives, today announced immediate availability of a bootable Linux USB (BLU) drive that is compatible with Windows® 7 and benefits WWF. These new penguin BLU drives are preloaded with the full installation of Ubuntu Linux 9.0.4.

BLU drives allow booting into Ubuntu Linux from the USB drive regardless of what operating system is installed on the hard drive. Because the hard drive will still be fully accessible when booting from the BLU drive, it’s an excellent disaster recovery solution in the event of problems with the operating system on the primary hard drive, because important data files on the hard drive can be backed up onto the BLU drive or another USB storage device.

This BLU drive is designed in the likeness of an emperor penguin with exacting detail, and is made of non-toxic silicone rubber. This drive is completely free of PVC, lead and mercury. Every purchase of a penguin drive benefits World Wildlife Fund. Under its licensing agreement with WWF AMP develops and sells a series of portable USB flash drives in the likeness of endangered species, which now includes penguin, panda and polar bear drives, and contributes five percent of the retail price of this product line to WWF.

WWF Penguin BLU drives are offered in up to 16GB capacities. Ubuntu is a community developed, Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. The Ubuntu operating system occupies about 700MB of the drive, so there is still plenty of usable storage space for carrying photos, music and other data.
