1Gbps Internet coming to 700 homes in California for $70 a month
At one time, a 1Gbps broadband connection to the Internet seemed like a pipe dream. That was until we reported in April 2010 that an ISP based in Hong Kong planned to offer it for an astonishing $26 a month. Luckily, such a service being offered here in the U.S. became more of a reality when Google partnered with Sonic.net.
In December of last year the two companies teamed up to manage Google’s trial fiber-to-the home-network at Stanford University which will encompass 850 faculty and staff homes on campus. One of the reasons Sonic.net was viewed as a top candidate to manage Google‘s network was due to the fact the company had previously announced its own plans to offer fiber connections of up to 1Gbps to homes in Sebastopol, California. That deployment has now begun.
